While in New Mexico, we went on a river rafting trip with a Native American guide. Our guide was named David, and he is a recovering alcoholic living on a Native American reservation. He showed to us the native dress for traditional dances and his animal skins/feathers, while explaining the significance of each of the items. We asked him a lot of questions which he willing answered and went into great detail; we really gained a better perspective on Native American life now and centuries ago. I chose to put this under "Recognizing Perspectives" because we heard from a native who has first hand experience with life on a reservation and as a Native American, their views on white encroachment. David explained to us the hesitation natives often have with sharing things about their traditions and religion because of the way they had been persecuted centuries ago, and with that information, I was further able to answer my overarching question.
